Local Doc Looks at One Family’s Educational Struggles during the Pandemic

Email share

Aisha Sultan, a St. Louis Post-Dispatch editor and reporter, follows a St. Louis mother of three for two years in Education, Interrupted, as she struggles to maintain her children’s education in one of the most poverty-stricken zip codes in the country, hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. The film premiered at the 2022 St. Louis International Film Festival in early November.

In her July 2022 column, Sultan says she was drawn to Tyra Johnson’s “optimistic, cheerful personality and her devotion to her children...she’s worked relentlessly, trying to provide a better life for her family.”

The film highlights the lasting impact the pandemic has had on children’s literacy skills, especially those in high-poverty districts.

Monday, December 12, 7 pm on Nine PBS and livestream.
