You’ve heard of St. Louis-style pizza and about our impact on the music world, but did you know St. Louisans have put their own spin on skating? St. Louis’s skating style is smooth.

Skate King, a rink in Pine Lawn, saw that style develop over the past 54 years. For generations, the rink has been a central gathering place for Black St. Louisans.

When Matthew Foggy opened his first rink in East St. Louis in 1970, he was moved by the then recent assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The rink was named in King’s honor, as a space committed to upholding the fight for his community.

“A sanctuary,” is how owner Matthew Foggy Jr. describes his rink.

“Parents know that they can drop their kids off and we are going to take care of them,” he said.

Regulars Joe “Crazy Legs” Hill and Kevin “Hollywood” Brown have been coming to the rink since they were kids and agree it feels like a family.

“This is a different world when you cross through that threshold,” Brown said.

Chad Harrell was inspired to document that world and St. Louis’ style in “Skate Lyfe TV.” Harrell wanted to capture moves like the g-slide and crazy legs. Harrell’s videos capture the intricate footwork and skaters’ smooth relaxed style—embodying St. Louis’ skating style.

His channel aims to capture skating greats like Hill and Brown doing the moves they’ve made or helped to make popular. At over 300,000 followers on YouTube, the channel is bringing St. Louis style to admirers near and far.

Skate King is also seeing new styles evolve, like ballroom skating. Foggy said the emerging style mirrors ballroom dancing but with the added difficulty of being on wheels.
