The Questions that Sparked “Listen, St. Louis with Carol Daniel”

Contributed by Carol Daniel, Senior Producer/Host

After 40 years in journalism, as a news anchor, reporter, talk show host, columnist and author, I am starting a new chapter where I get to have the type of conversations that mean the most to me. I have always wanted to talk about issues that are personal to me and, I hope, matter to many of those in our community.

Like many of you, my family and I have faced racism and sexism in education, housing, healthcare, and the workplace. How did we get here?

How is it possible that a successful, educated Black woman would still face racism when she tried to rent an apartment? Why would my son face harsher discipline in middle school compared to his counterparts for the same infractions?

These are a handful of the experiences we have had to battle through, and those with fewer resources and wherewithal face a tougher battle. So, I want to know, how did we get here?

How do we heal and progress? Who or what is holding us back? What must we do to help Black and brown children not only survive but thrive? How do we change the narrative of St. Louis?

First, we must talk openly about it.

Nine PBS is anchored in community, trust, equity, and learning. This podcast enhances those values as well as my own: empathy, clarity, and understanding.

I am so humbled and excited for you to hear and see Listen, St. Louis with Carol Daniel, where we can deepen our understanding and provide clarity about the many issues we face in the St. Louis region at this crucial time. If there are people you think I should talk to, let me know here.
